Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting Award

The Irish Research Council has the pleasure of announcing that it is willing to sponsor 5 talented young researchers to attend the 63rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Chemistry), to be held from 30th June to 5th July 2013 on the isle of Lindau, situated on Lake Constance in south Germany (www.lindau-nobel.org).

The annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings provide a globally recognised forum for the transfer of knowledge between generations of scientists. 20 to 30 Nobel Laureates congregate in Lindau each year to meet the next generation of leading scientists in a given field. Approximately 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students from all over the globe will get the unique opportunity to participate in the meeting, which will include lectures and discussions in pure and applied research.

We are delighted that the President of Ireland, Mr Michael D. Higgins, has agreed to be patron of this initiative.

Selection process

Lindau meeting attendees must pass a multi-stage selection procedure. The Irish Research Council has agreed to run a national selection process. (Please see Call documentation for details.) Those who succeed in this national selection process will be presented with a prize by the President of Ireland.

These prize holders then pass to the international selection process conducted by the Lindau Review Panel. This panel makes the final selection from the pool of best talents, examining 1,500 profiles for every meeting before finally choosing the 500 top applicants to receive an invitation to Lindau. Taking into account the national selection procedures, in excess of 20,000 young researchers apply to attend each meeting.

Award

Successful candidates of this multi-stage process will be sponsored by the Irish Research Council to attend the next Lindau Meeting. This sponsorship will include travel costs from Ireland to Germany and a conference fee (totalling typically €3000).
