Irish Research Council warmly welcomes admittance of former Director to the Royal Irish Academy

The Irish Research Council warmly welcomes the admittance of its recently-departed Director, Dr Eucharia Meehan, to the Royal Irish Academy. Dr Meehan stepped down in mid-May to take up a new role as Registrar and CEO of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Dr Meehan has been replaced on an interim basis by Mr Peter Brown, formerly Deputy Director.

Dr Meehan served as the Director of the Irish Research Council since its establishment in 2012 following the merger of two former Councils, IRCHSS and IRCSET. During her five year tenure, a strategy of partnering with employers, government entities and civic society organisations led to the expansion of the Council's funding programme portfolio. In 2016 she spearheaded the national #LoveIrishResearch communication campaign. Most recently she has successfully overseen the launch of the new Irish Research Council Laureate Awards which will fund internationally competitive frontier research. Prior to joining the Council, Dr Meehan was Head of Research and Innovation (policy and investment) at the Higher Education Authority. This position encompassed a role as Director of the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI). The PRTLI invested €1.2bn of Exchequer and non-Exchequer funding, leading to the development of strategic research infrastructure and capacity across many areas of research and scholarship in Ireland.

Commenting today, Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Chair of the Irish Research Council, said : ‘We commend Dr Meehan’s admittance to the Academy. Eucharia has very capably led the Irish Research Council for the past 5 years. We would like to thank her for her dedicated service, and in particular, acknowledge her efforts to secure funding for basic frontier research in Ireland. The establishment of the Irish Research Council’s Laureate funding programme represents a real milestone for the Irish research landscape. Eucharia has contributed in no small part to these developments. I, together with Council and its Interim Director, look forward to continued implementation of the Council’s mission to fund excellent research across all disciplines. ’
